Need To Teach Your Teen Responsibility? Start With Auto Insurance And Phone Bills

It can be hard to teach your teen how to be responsible with money when an adult has to co-sign or take out the policies that they need, and the adult makes sure the bill is covered because they worry about their own credit. There are a lot of things you can do to help make your teen more responsible, and ways you can teach them about being responsible.

They Pay Their Cell Phone Bill

To teach your teen responsibility, you should require that they pay their cell phone bills. This means that they can either prepay for the minutes, or they have to pay you a set amount each month. If they don't you can limit their data or texting through the network, and they will realize if they don't pay for the bill the phone will be disconnected.

They Pay Auto Insurance

The cost for auto insurance at a young age will be costly, and you have to be 18 years old to have a policy. For the time that your teen has to have their insurance under your policy, you want to be strict about making payments and driving responsibly.

If you worry about the costs, then find an auto insurance company that will give your teen a discount for these things:

  • Good grades
  • Defensive drivers training
  • Completing drivers education
  • Pledging not to text and drive

The auto insurance provider may also give a discount if you are opening  a new policy with them, and if you move over other policies as well. If they get a ticket or if there is another problem where they get some type of fine or lose their license, make sure that you make them pay the increase in their auto insurance costs, or make sure you personally make them go without driving to learn a lesson.

There are so many things that you provide your teen with because you are their parent and you care about them, but you have to make sure that you make them earn their privileges, and that you don't just pay for everything. They aren't going to learn about anything if everything comes easily, and if they don't know how much it costs to have the things that they have, and to do the things that they want to do. Look at other ways to make them responsible, and start with these two things first.
